Sarita & Jonathan — “A Love Worth the Wait”
Some stories begin with a single glance—and ours began at Hampton University in 2009.
At the time, I was serving as the Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute, and Jonathan was evolving in his career in law enforcement. One day, as God would have it, he passed by my office—one that was rarely open, except that day when I happened to be moving in furniture. He did a double take, his eyes lighting up as he glanced in.
Curious, he asked around about me (so I’m told by my secretary), and made a few more “official” visits to my building—but still, we never spoke. Until one day, by divine timing, we finally ran into each other. That’s when he asked for my number.
I smiled and said, “I don’t give out my number, but you can join my Relay for Life team.” And for that reason, we exchanged numbers. :)
Months passed before I accepted his invitation to dinner. Jonathan says I was two hours late—though I’m not sure I recall it that way! What I do remember is that our first date was filled with laughter, easy conversation, and something that just felt… right. Still, I wasn’t ready to make things official right away. But Jonathan’s consistency, patience, and kindness slowly won me over.
We share so many similarities—it’s almost as if our hearts were designed to match. I love to laugh, and Jay keeps me laughing daily with his quick wit and humor. I’m a singer, and he loves music. We bring joy, rhythm, and light into each other’s worlds.
Through every season—ups and downs alike—we’ve grown together, becoming not just partners, but best friends. We truly love being around each other, and that connection only deepened with time.
On August 30, 2025, Jonathan surprised me during one of my jazz performances at Varia in Norfolk. In front of friends, family, and a room full of music, he asked me to be his forever—and of course, I said yes.
Now, we’re beyond excited to celebrate our love and begin this next chapter as husband and wife on November 15, 2025. A short engagement, yes—but when it’s meant to be, love doesn’t need to wait. We share a love that’s worth the wait. And ours is…. #AMaysingLove.
